Sumatra
Sumatra (Sumatera) was known in ancient times by the
Sanskrit names of Swarnadwipa or Swarnabhumi ("Land of Gold").
Empire of Srivijaya, a Buddhist monarchy, dominating the region
throughout the 7th to 9th centuries. Late in the 14th century the
name Sumatra became popular as the kingdom of Samudra was rising.
Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world (470,000 km²).
Its length is about 1,790 km. Its highest point is Mount Kerinci
(3,805 m). The interior of the island is dominated by Bukit Barisan
mountains in the west and swampy plains in the east.
The volcanic activity gives the fertile land and beautiful sceneries,
especially Lake Toba. Most of Sumatra is covered by tropical rainforest.
It has the world's largest flower, Rafflesia arnoldii. It also has
many fantastic animals: tiger, orangutan, rhinoceros, elephant,
tapir, and sun bear.
