Belgium

The Kingdom of Belgium (30,528 km2) is a low-lying country on the North Sea coast in the Benelux. The name Belgium is derived from Gallia Belgica, a Roman province. Belgium has flat coastal plains in northwest, central rolling hills, wooded hills and valleys of Ardennes Forest in southeast. Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home for two main linguistic groups, the Flemings and the French-speakers, mostly Walloons, plus a small group of German-speakers. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, Belgium was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture.
