Celebes (Sulawesi)
Celebes or Sulawesi is the world's 11-th-largest island
(174,600 km²) in the world. Sulawesi possibly comes from the
words sula (island) and besi (iron). The central part
of the island is ruggedly mountainous. The highest peak is Rantemario
(3,478 m). Sulawesi straddles Wallace's Line, so it has a mix of
both Asian and Australasian species. There are 79 species of endemic
mammals, like anoa and babirusa. They are found nowhere
else in the world.
The are many ethnic groups in Sulawesi that offer fantastic cultural
heritages: Makassarese, Buginese, Mandar, Minahasa, Gorontalo, Toraja,
Bajau, etc. We can explore Sulawesi from Bulukumba in the south
to Manado in the north. We can visit Bantimurung waterfall, burial
ceremony in Toraja, also marine park in Bunaken.
